Presentation
Moray Firth Amateur Radio Society
presentation 25/02/2006
Geoff Crowley mm5aho was presented with a shack clock and
barometer for his dedication to amateur radio in the Moray
area from club president John Brown on behalf of the members
of the Moray Firth amateur radio society.
Geoff Moved to the area in 1993 and applied for the call
gm7sjc, he was instrumental in reforming the Moray Firth Amateur
Radio Society which had been defunct for a number of years
.He rounded up a hand full of existing radio hams in the area
and club meetings started. Soon the call sign Gm3tkv was back
on the air again from various locations in Moray, broken and
out of date equipment was sold off and new radios, caravan,
tower and antennas were added to the club’s assets.
Geoff was appointed secretary/chairman of the society he ran
courses for the Radio Amateurs Exam, word spread and around
40 locals sat and passed the foundation exam and RAE.
Committee meetings and Construction evenings were held at
Geoff’s home and at the Grant Arms hotel in Fochabers
and members added new homebrew kit to their stations which
included antenna’s, baluns, artificial earths and filters.
Geoff spent many hours modifying an old lighting tower with
diesel generator for the club.
New licenses came into existence and the foundation courses
started. Geoff’s work commitments tied him up now and
again, however he found time to compile information for committee
members to lecture in his absence.
A great many mm3 calls soon found their way onto the bands.
Geoff stood down as secretary and chairman at the 2006 AGM
due to a house move which will take him away from the area
closer to work in Cumbernauld.
His commitment and enthusiasm for amateur radio rubbed off
onto all he met and a great many voices over the either from
this little corner of Scotland would not be heard if it had
not been for Geoff.
