About MFARS
Moray Firth Amateur Radio Society is a group of some 40-50
amateur radio enthusiasts with a variety of radio, electronics
and computer interests. Membership varies from year to year,
and there are a number of non-member radio amateurs in the
area who are involved in our activities. Visiting hams and
those interested in starting our in ham radio are welcome
to attend our events. MFARS is an RSGB
Affiliated Society.
Our aims are to support and encourage amateur radio in the
Moray area, including: introducing amateur radio to community
groups such as scouts; running amateur radio stations at public
events such as highland games; providing training
and exam facilities to help newcomers to the hobby get licensed
and on the air; and entering radio events
such as contests and special event days on the air.
Most of our members live in the area between Keith and Nairn,
centred around Elgin. Club meetings, junk sales and training
courses are held in the Fochabers Scouts hall.
The club holds the callsign GM3TKV, which we use to enter
contests and other special events. See the Past
Events pages for details and photos of some of these events.
The club owns a variety of radio equipment which is available
for club members to use, particularly for contests and special
events. We have a caravan fitted out as a portable radio station,
a crank-up mobile antenna tower, various HF/VHF antennas,
high-performance HF and VHF/UHF transceivers, power supplies
and a variety of smaller equipment.
MFARS also owns and operates the GB3SS
(Speyside) VHF repeater which serves Moray and parts of the
surrounding area.
For those interested in starting out in amateur radio, we
run training courses for Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced
radio amateur examinations, and have a registered examination
centre in Fochabers. See the Courses
page for information.
For more information about the club and joining up, contact
the club officers.
Non-members and visitors are welcome to attend our events
and meetings (particularly the junk sales!).
